For the past 3 years, Howard Ward Associates have developed a niche service by providing exclusive structural engineering support to one of the largest suppliers of Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) products in the UK, BECO Wallform. ICF has grown rapidly initially in the bespoke residential sector but increasingly in wider commercial applications.

ICF is an innovative alternative to traditional construction which is uses large hollow lightweight polystyrene blocks which lock together without intermediate bedding materials to provide a formwork system into which concrete is poured. The concrete provides the structural strength for wall construction while the polystyrene blocks provide excellent thermal insulation.

BECO Wallform blocksWe have now worked on over 50 projects involving ICF construction giving us a detailed understanding of its structural performance. Our Head of Design Andy Marlor recently made a presentation on ICF at Birmingham's ThinkTank as part of Mtech's Off-Site Construction programme of events.
